The Watchdog water alarm has saved me several times over the years. Takes one nine volt battery - my batteries seem to last me about two years (there is a low battery CHIRP alert). The bottom of the sensor must be placed DOWN on where water from a leak would accumulate. The sensor plate is removable, if desired (so the alarm unit can be 6 feet away). You do have to be home to hear the alarm. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Basement-Watchdog-Battery-Operated-Water-Alarm-BWD-HWA/100038838 My personal advice, NEVER use a plastic water line for a toilet connection - fire departments tell me that these often break. My neighbor's plastic line broke and put 5 inches of water (depth) in her apartment. I use hoses with a stainless steel (NOT plastic) jacket around them - seems to prevent leaks (for over 28 years). I would replace very old toilet waterlines unless they are completely made of metal (no metal appearing plastic lines). Just my personal advice (I am not a plumber nor a fireman).
